Overstressed, overstimulated…

If you are overstressed, overstimulated and overworked, then there is something you need to do.

In his captivating book, The Comfort Crisis, Professor Michael Easter says it’s imperative to reconnect with Mother Nature.

According to Easter, a chronic addiction to our phones is one of the major reasons why we are struggling to curb our incessant eating.

We aren’t eating due to hunger.

More often than not, we eat because we are bored.

Because we are glued to our phones, we are in a constant state of stimulation.

Those reels and stories and videos on social media are providing non-stop stimulation.

And this constant connection to the phone is providing a steady drip-feed of dopamine.

But what happens when we put our phones down?

What happens when we just sit there?

That’s right.

We get bored - almost instantly.

That’s when we start to feel restless and your mind turns to your stomach.

But it’s not because we are hungry.

We’re just looking for another hit of dopamine, only this time via something sweet or savoury.

That’s one of the reasons why so many of us struggle to control our eating in the evenings.

If any of this rings true then you’re probably eager to hear the solution.

Easter doesn’t provide a cure, but he does recommend some remedies.

He says we need to start embracing boredom!

For starters, we need to put our phones down.

We need to live in the moment without checking Insta and without sneaking yet another 100 calorie snack down our throats - the third one of the evening.

Pointing to how humans lived for thousands of years, Easter says we need to reconnect with nature and silence.

He cites a heap of research which shows how our stress levels plummet simply from spending time in a forest or park.

One study from the University of Michigan discovered that 20 minutes outside, three times a week will lead to a significant drop in stress.

Yoga, meditation, pilates - any activity which is going to take you away from your phone and get you to focus on your breathing will also have major benefits.

Most of all we need to learn to live with silence again.

So don’t look at your steps as a task or a chore.

Getting outside might be the best therapy there is.

It’s going to lower your stress levels - but only if you don’t bring your phone.

We’re overstimulated.

And if you get addicted to being stimulated via your phone, once you set it down, you are going to need to get another hit from someplace else.

And it’s going to be the kitchen.

If we don’t learn to ditch our phones, we’re going to struggle to ditch our bellies.
