The Best System Wins

When it comes to getting leaner, fitter and stronger, motivation will get you started.

Ultimately though, it’s your system which will take you to the promised land.

Your system must be efficient.

The less time, thought, and indecision it takes you to stay in a calorie deficit, do 3 Shred Sessions a week, and 10,000 steps a day - the more likely you are to do it.

Take Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Facebook, who has a net worth of $90 billion. Zuckerberg wears pretty much the same clothes every day.

With few exceptions Zuckerberg wears a pair of blue jeans, a grey t-shirt, and a hooded sweatshirt.

Albert Einstein had a wardrobe full of grey suits.

Steve Jobs almost exclusively wore a black turtleneck, blue jeans and New Balance trainers.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama told Vanity Fair magazine: “You’ll see I wear only the same grey or blue suits. I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing because I have too many other decisions to make.”

Okay, I can already hear some of you saying: ‘Do you expect me to wear the same bloody clothes every day?’

No. Not at all. That’s not the point I am trying to make.

I am trying to ram home the message that you must streamline your day.

You must eradicate indecision and procrastination.

Here’s a great quote from the author of one of the best books ever written about running.

When Haruki Murakami is writing his books he adheres to the following strict routine.

“When I’m in writing mode for a novel, I get up at 4am and work for 5 to 6 hours. In the afternoon, I run 4 kilometres or swim for 1,500metres (or do both), then I read a bit and listen to some music. I go to bed at 9pm. I keep this routine every day without variation. The repetition itself becomes the important thing; it’s a form of mesmerism. I mesmerise myself to reach a deeper state of mind.”

The repetition becomes a form of mesmerism.

If you are to succeed on The Shred then you must immerse yourself in the repetition of The Shred.

In effect you have to mesmerise yourself.

Because you have to remember that whatever motivation you have right now will not last.

That hardcore, turbo-charged motivation never last for more than a few weeks.

And that’s okay.

During the phase when your motivation is high, you need to fine tune your system so it will take you through the bumps and slumps of the hard times.

So, let’s break it down.

Here are a few suggestions:

To maintain a calorie deficit, you should:

🔷  Develop an eating plan. Know what you will eat and when you will eat it.

🔷 Have a shopping routine. You will eat what’s in your kitchen. Make sure your cupboards are stocked with the food that's on your eating plan.

To train consistently, you need:

🔶 A defined training area which requires minimal set-up time

🔶 A set training time when you do your Shred Sessions. Set the time and stick to it.

🔶 Your training gear set-out in advance

🔶 Your training gear stored neatly so it can be found quickly

To do your steps consistently, you need to:

🔷 Plan your day - setting the time when you will do your steps

🔷 Plan your week - if you know there are days you will struggle to do 10,000 steps - identify the days when you could do a surplus

The key thing I want you to grasp is that you must develop your own system which can do on auto-pilot.

Because it’s exactly like Haruki Murakami says. If you develop a system and stick to it - you will enter a state of mesmerism.

And this is the state of being which will change your body and your life.
